Are Twitter & Facebook Links Good for Your Google Ranking? Probably, if you could actually get them!!!
While Matt Cutts discusses that links from FB and Twitter are treated equal to trusted sites, he only quietly mentions that it all depends on Googlebot being able to find the links in the first place. Facebook user pages have to be logged in to be crawled, so that squarely puts Facebook out from the count. Twitter has been using the NOFOLLOW tag in user pages to prevent passing PR to linked pages since 2007. And the other thing everyone seems to forget about is the robots.txt file, which for Twitter prevents all search results pages ever being crawled by bots. Most Twitter pages evolve so darn quickly that even if you do post a link, the chances are it will have dropped off the bottom of lists before bots get round to crawling them again, ie no permanence. There is so little space in Twitter posts that people usually have to use redirect links which might pose a problem for bots (make sure to use reliable 301 based redirects, eg tinyurl or bit.ly), and rarely do people make use of good keyword anchor text when creating their links. I’d like to see proof that people have actually obtained proper indexable, followable page rank passing links from Twitter.
